Overview

Hi, I’m Mangal Lama. I’m a Nepali mountain biker and recently accomplished a feat that has never been done before – I completed the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) in Nepal on a mountain bike. This 1,700km hiking route is known for its challenging terrain, but I took on the challenge as part of my project called “GHT on Wheels.”

Explore Mangal’s journey through the GHT High Route on this interactive map.

I began my journey on April 1st and completed it in 88 days, solo cycling through the Nepal section of the GHT, which is part of the larger trans-Himalayan arc extending across China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, and Pakistan. Along the way, I faced many challenges, including sections that were not suitable for bicycles, illness, the monsoon season, and getting lost in the wilderness. The most difficult part was crossing the 6,190m West Col in the Makalu-Barun National Park, where I had to carry my bike on my back and shoulders while also carrying full climbing gear.

But my journey was about more than just personal achievement. I also had a larger goal of improving education and showcasing lesser-known areas of Nepal for tourism, both for trekking and mountain biking, in order to raise local incomes. I partnered with Vision Dolpo and raised funds for Early Childhood Development Centers through crowdsourcing and sponsorships.

My adventure, “GHT on Wheels,” gained widespread attention on social media, with thousands following my progress on the website and Instagram. I am now working on a book and documentary film about my journey, which includes spiritual lessons I learned as I rode past some of the most tranquil and scenic places in the world.

If you’re interested in experiencing the thrill of mountain biking in Nepal with an expert guide, I’m your man. I have years of experience leading mountain biking adventures throughout Nepal, and can help you plan the perfect trip. Just be aware that mountain biking requires more logistical planning, safety considerations, and gear than trekking, so it’s important to find a well-recommended guide. “For the GHT, you have to have a combination of time, money, and passion,” I say. “If you have the time, but don’t have the money, you can’t. You need all three.”

Mission

My mission is to promote the Nepal section of the Great Himalaya Trail in the national and international area, showcase the unparalleled potential of mountain biking in the Nepal Himalayas, and bring to light climate change related challenges faced by people of the surroundings.

My Story

I am a mountain biker from Nepal who recently achieved a major milestone by becoming the first person to complete the Great Himalayan Trail (GHT) in Nepal on a mountain bike. My journey, called “GHT on Wheels,” took 88 days to complete and is currently being documented in a book and film. I grew up in a farming family in Kakani and developed a passion for cycling while working at a cycle shop in Kathmandu. Despite facing many challenges and setbacks, I was determined to pursue my dream of becoming a professional mountain biker and eventually started my own company, El Yak, where I lead tours and design adventure programs. Through my determination and perseverance, I have achieved great success and inspired others to follow their dreams and pursue their passions.

Current Projects

I’m excited to announce that we are working on several exciting projects related to my solo-riding journey on the Great Himalaya Trail (GHT). These projects include a book, a documentary, and a series of adventure trips. The book, which is still in progress, will be a memoir of my 88-day journey and will provide a detailed account of the challenges and triumphs I faced as I rode through some of the most remote and under-appreciated areas of Nepal. The documentary will use footage captured by drones, GoPros, and cameras to tell the story of my journey and highlight the stunning landscapes, cultures, and communities I encountered along the way. The adventure trips, which are available for booking under the #myghtonwheels brand, will be led by me and will provide unique and authentic experiences for travelers who want to explore the beauty and culture of the Nepal Himalayas.
